The Rise of Wellness in Bali: How Canggu is Leading the Health & Fitness Trend
Bali 2024: A Personal Reflection
Bali has long been a destination that inspires relaxation, rejuvenation, and escape. But recently, something has shifted—what was once known for its beaches and party scene has become a wellness mecca, especially in Canggu.
For those of us who’ve been coming to Bali for years, it’s incredible to see how much the island has evolved. More and more people are choosing to focus on their health, fitness, and overall wellbeing during their stay, and it’s not hard to see why. From yoga and pilates to cutting-edge gyms and healthy eateries, Bali’s wellness scene is booming—and nowhere is this more evident than in Canggu.
I’ve been coming to Bali for little while now, and I’ll be honest, I’ve always been a fan of the laid-back vibe, the beach clubs, and the vibrant nightlife. But this time, things felt different.
Canggu, once a quiet surf town, now pulses with energy driven by a community that values health, fitness, and mindfulness. It’s no longer just about catching the perfect wave—it’s about nurturing the body and mind.
Canggu: The Wellness Hub of Bali
When we arrived in Canggu, it didn’t take long to notice that this was a very different Bali experience. Sure, the beaches are still beautiful, and the rice fields remain as lush as ever. But now, they’re surrounded by sleek gyms, wellness retreats, organic cafes, and smoothie bars. You could spend your whole day in Canggu without ever needing to leave to find a healthy meal, a great workout, or a space to relax and reflect.
Gyms & Fitness Clubs: A Health Junkie’s Paradise
If you’re into fitness, Canggu is the place to be. The gym scene here is unlike anywhere else on the island. There’s a real focus on strength training, functional fitness, and group workouts that cater to every level. One of our favourites was The Body Factory, where we dived into daily HYROX classes (a mix of cardio and strength) and strength training sessions that pushed us to the limit. The gym itself is world-class, with a fantastic recovery area featuring ice baths and saunas. The community feel at The Body Factory was something special—they made us feel like regulars, even though it was our first time there. And let me tell you, nothing beats the feeling of diving into a 4°C ice bath after a killer workout.
For those looking for something a little more zen, Nirvana Life offers a holistic approach to wellness with yoga, pilates, and meditation classes. If you’re looking to reset your body and mind, this place is a sanctuary.
Healthy Eating: Where Food Meets Wellness
Of course, no wellness journey is complete without good food, and Canggu has a growing reputation as a foodie haven, especially for those who want to eat clean, healthy meals. We’re talking about cafes and restaurants that serve nutrient-dense, plant-based dishes, fresh smoothies, and vegan options.
Some of the best meals we had during our trip were at Mason, where they focus on locally-sourced, organic ingredients, and Lulu Bistrot, which offers healthy twists on traditional favourites. If you’re in the mood for a casual bite, Crate Cafe is the perfect spot to enjoy hearty and wholesome meals, from smoothie bowls to giant avocado toasts.
Mindfulness & Recovery: Embracing Balance
In Canggu, we made time for stillness each day, whether through journaling or reading. These small rituals helped ground us and offered space to unwind, reflect, and recharge.
Massage and wellness treatments were essential to our stay. Bali’s spa culture is unmatched, and one standout experience was at Beach House by Tonic, a beach club spa where we enjoyed luxurious treatments right by the ocean. Whether it was a deep tissue massage or a calming reflexology session, the soothing sounds of the waves added an extra layer of relaxation. It was the perfect way to nourish both body and mind after a busy day, leaving us feeling completely rejuvenated and centred.
After a day of unwinding, we’d head to places like The Lawn and Mari Beach Club to enjoy the lively energy of Canggu. Sipping cocktails while watching the sunset and listening to the waves was the perfect way to balance relaxation with social enjoyment, capturing the essence of Canggu’s unique wellness vibe.
The Canggu Community: A Place to Grow, Together
I met so many incredible people during our trip—fellow travellers, expats, locals—and it’s clear that Canggu has become a hub for people who prioritise their health and wellness, both physically and mentally. It’s a space where people come to reset, recharge, and evolve.
Bali’s Wellness Evolution: From Party Island to Health Haven
Bali has always been a destination that brings people together, but today, it’s a place where people come to find balance, strength, and clarity. The island’s wellness scene has grown exponentially in the last few years, with Canggu at the forefront of this movement. For those of us looking for a healthier, more mindful way to travel, Bali now offers something much more than beaches and bars. It’s a place where you can truly reset—body, mind, and soul.
For me, this trip to Bali wasn’t just about enjoying the usual holiday activities—it was about embracing a new way of living and connecting with my body and mind in ways I hadn’t before. Canggu’s wellness scene made it easy to maintain a routine while also experiencing the beauty and culture of Bali.
If you’re planning to visit Bali and are into health, fitness, and mindfulness, make sure to carve out time in Canggu. The wellness scene here is thriving, and it’s an experience that will leave you feeling better than ever before.
