Discover the Cameron Highlands: Tea Plantations, Strawberry Farms, and Misty Forests

Nestled in the lush hills of Pahang, this charming hill station feels like a world away from the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur.

With emerald-green tea plantations and misty mountains, the Cameron Highlands is a must visit destination when in Malaysia.

A Brief History

The Cameron Highlands was discovered in the late 19th century by William Cameron, a British surveyor. During the colonial era, the British established tea plantations and hill resorts here to escape the tropical heat. Today, these manicured grasslands and dedicated work men remain to serve you some of the most famous tea in the world.

BOH Tea Plantation

First stop was the rolling hills of the BOH Tea Plantation.
Wandering through the fields, I was struck by the sheer hard work and dedication of the men labouring tirelessly in the fields, come rain, hail, or shine. It felt like stepping back in time, watching their relentless rhythm of ‘chop, cut, bag’ with giant machetes amid the endless valley of tea plantations.

I couldn’t help but feel immense respect for these dedicated workmen who put their bodies on the line so that we can relax on our comfy sofas, tea in hand, pinkie raised.

Once you arrive back at the factory, it’s time to learn about the tea-making process, from plucking to packaging. Guided tours offer a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at each stage of production. From withering and rolling to fermentation and drying, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating the perfect cup of tea. Watching the machinery in action, you’ll see how modern techniques blend with traditional methods to preserve the tea’s distinctive flavour and quality.

It's time to feel like royalty and put the tea to test with a trip to the Cameron Valley Tea House. Even if you don’t drink tea, the Tea House itself is a must-see. With panoramic views and a serene vibe, you can sit and appreciate the reality of being 1,500 metres above sea level, surrounded by endless rolling hills of vibrant green tea bushes. Just take a moment to slow down, breathe, and soak up the crisp mountain air.

Strawberry Farms

Strawberries might not be the first thing you associate with Malaysia, but the cool climate of the Cameron Highlands makes it the perfect place for these sweet treats.

Many of these farms are part of larger agro-tourism attractions. You can often find fresh produce, local honey, and even small flower gardens to wander through. It’s a great way to support local businesses while experiencing the agricultural side of the Cameron Highlands.

Top Strawberry Farms to Visit

  • Big Red Strawberry Farm: Located near Brinchang, this farm offers a wide range of strawberry-themed treats, from fresh strawberries to strawberry ice cream and waffles. The well-maintained hydroponic farm also features a cafe and a lovely garden to explore.

  • Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm: Known for its friendly staff and well-organised setup, this farm allows you to pick your own strawberries and enjoy a variety of fresh strawberry desserts.

  • Kea Farm Strawberry Garden: A smaller yet charming spot where you can pick strawberries and shop for homemade jams and preserves.

Try the local strawberry jam paired with freshly baked scones.

Mossy Forest

Located at one of the highest elevations in the region, near Gunung Brinchang,
this forest is often veiled in mist, giving it an eerie, otherworldly vibe.

With its twisted trees draped in moss and ferns, a guided tour is highly recommended to fully appreciate its beauty and learn about the unique ecosystem. And if you're fortunate enough to visit on a clear day, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views stretching across the valleys below!

  • Entrance to the Mossy Forest costs around RM10 for adults and RM5 for children (subject to change). Guided tours may have additional fees.

  • You can reach the Mossy Forest by car, but the road leading up can be steep and narrow, so hiring a local guide or joining a tour is a popular choice.

  • Requires a good level of movement and mobility, as many sections involve navigating uneven paths and numerous steps. Wear sturdy shoes to ensure a comfortable experience.

  • Open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though hours may vary depending on weather conditions.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in the Cameron Highlands ranges from cosy guest houses to luxurious resorts.

For a backpacker-friendly option, I recommend Bricks Hostel. It offers great, comfortable, and private beds, and its excellent location near the bus station in Tanah Rata makes it incredibly convenient for your travels. Additionally, they provide tour booking services and organise group walking tours, treks, and day trips alongside fellow travellers.

For those looking for a mid-range budget option, Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands is a fantastic choice. This Tudor-style hotel offers spacious rooms, beautiful garden views, and an on-site restaurant. It’s located near Tanah Rata, providing easy access to trekking trails, local eateries, and other attractions.

Tips and Tricks

  • Getting There: The Cameron Highlands is a 3-4 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. Alternatively, you can take a bus from KL or Ipoh.

  • Best Time to Visit: The highlands are pleasant year-round, but weekdays are less crowded than weekends. The rainy season (November to February) adds a magical mist to the scenery, but pack a raincoat.

  • What to Pack: Bring layers, as the temperatures can drop to 15°C (59°F) at night. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring trails.

  • In Need of a Gym?: If you’re looking to stay active, Joe’s Gym in Tanah Rata offers a convenient option. A day pass costs around RM15, giving you access to basic workout equipment in a welcoming environment.

A Highlands Escape

The Cameron Highlands offers the perfect escape from city life and the hustle and bustle of travel. It’s a refreshing change of pace, not only in activities and surroundings but also in altitude and climate. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend adding the Cameron Highlands to your Malaysia to-do list.
