A Weekend Escape to Brač: Slow Living on Croatia's Island Gem
June 2024.
London living.
But just about to head home to an Aussie winter.
What really, what’s the point of living in Europe if your weekends aren’t spent on a Mediterranean island…?
I knew I had time for one final adventure and one more EasyJet experience.
But it had to be a new addition to the country count list.
I googled,
‘Italy or Croatia?’
To my surprise, it appeared the online travel community had a lot to say about the similarities between Croatia and Italy.
And with just three days to spare, it had to be a short, sun-kissed, and beach-bound trip.
Split, Croatia it was.
But after witnessing London turn into a beehive of tourists in a now sticky, hot, and sweltering city, the last thing I needed was more of the same.
It was time to go island shopping!
Hvar, Vis, Šolta, or Brač.
So many great choices!
With the purest of agendas to simply read my book on a rocky beach for three days—and maybe head back to Aus with more of a tan than I left with—all I needed was some slow living.
Select Brač—add to cart!
Brač—an island just off the coast of Split, 50 minutes by ferry, known for its rugged beauty, sleepy villages, and laid-back charm. Winner.
ABOUT THE ISLAND
Brač – The largest island in central Dalmatia and the third largest in the Adriatic.
Famous for its figs, olives, almonds, and wine grapes, the island’s economy has traditionally been based on fishing and agriculture.
Home to Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) beach near the town of Bol, recognised for its unique shape and clear waters, making it a popular destination for sunbathers and windsurfers.
Supetar - Brač’s cultural, economic, and tourist centre.
Features a picturesque waterfront with traditional stone houses, a lively harbour, and attractions such as the Parish Church of St. Peter, early Christian mosaics, and the Supetar Cemetery.
Brač = a captivating destination for visitors seeking both relaxation and exploration.

WHERE TO STAY
Waterman Beach Village
Glamping, bungalows, and a sunset bar, less than 200 meters from your own private beach.
If you’re looking for a beach day, simply walk out of your rooms, wander down the driveway towards the smell of salt and you will have arrived at your destination. Floating in the turquoise waters, gazing directly back at mainland Croatia. Pretty insane.
Waterman Beach Village is a modern waterfront complex located in Supetar on the island of Brač.
Situated approximately 800 meters from both Alexander Beach and the center of Supetar, this cosy caravan park serves an easy going, family-friendly and non frills beach escape.
Two outdoor swimming pools, on-site Sunset Point Bar & Restaurant and Mika's Sport and Fun Park, the resort has it all.
I was fortunate enough to be upgraded into a Bungalow which was surprising since it was, well… just me.
The bungalows can accommodate up to six people, with two separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private covered patio.
The studios are ideal for up to three guests, each studio features a combined bedroom and fully equipped kitchen, one bathroom, and a private covered patio.
For a unique experience, glamping tents accommodate up to four guests and offer a bedroom combined with a fully equipped kitchen, an additional bed in a loft area, one bathroom, and a private covered patio.
The absolute winner, winner, chicken dinner for me was not just the eternal peace and quiet where only the bugs buzz above, but the super friendly property cat who liked to keep me company on occasion.
WHERE TO EAT
Girls gotta eat…
Lidil & Tommy Hipermarket (seriously!!)
Eating out on the Med is no cheap date and so I would highly recommend heading to the local supermarkets and stocking up on all the island fresh produce, cheese, dips, meats and liquor and indulge in a good old home-made picnic of delights.
However, if you are looking for a little something’, something’ more…
Bistro Pizzeria Vrilo: Located next to Waterman’s Village, serving delicious western and local meals (try the pizza!)
Sidro Restourant: A little bit further down the beach front but a fantastic spot to sit by the water, people watching as the sun goes down. Try the grilled fish or calamari!
HOT TIP:
Be prepared to NOT be able to read the menu!!
Download google translate on your phone, scan the menu with the camera feature. You came for authentic med, you get authentic med.
BEACH OF BRAC
Being one of the biggest islands around, there is a lot to explore.
Here are some of the most recommended beaches to get your tan on.
Zlatni Rat – The most famous beach on the island, with its unique shape that shifts with the tides. It’s stunning but can get busy.
Lovrečina Bay – A sandy beach (which is rare in Croatia!) with shallow waters, perfect for a chill day.
Murvica Beach – A quieter spot with crystal-clear water and a bit of a remote feel.
Supetar Beach – Right by the main town, easy to access, with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.
Getting around:
If you want the most flexible way to see Brač’s best sights, rent a car or scooter. If you're on a budget, buses and bikes can still get you to most key locations, but plan ahead.
This trip was exactly what I needed before heading back to Aus.
Brač is such a perfect place to slow down, enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic, and soak in that laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere.
If you’re heading to Croatia and want an escape from the crowds of Split, I couldn’t recommend Brač more.
If you’re looking for the ultimate relaxing getaway—this is it.
