Conquering the 762 Curves: Thailand’s Highway 1095

Renting scooters in Asia is a great way to explore your surroundings cheaply and independently.

This newly fierce, fast (and cautious) newly liberated scooter driver undertook a few different routes and thought I would share them with you all…

The Route: Highway 1095: Highway 1095 is not only renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for its challenging 762-curve road stretching from Chiang Mai to Pai. The route promises equal parts excitement and challenge—perfect for thrill-seekers looking for an authentic travel experience.

My Experience:

It’s a debate between getting the bus or braving the roads. It’s equal parts exhilarating and challenging (or stomach-churning, depending on the hangover).

For those worried about the practicality of transporting your big backpack all the way up to Pai, have no fear, AYA is here!

AYA has a seamless setup that allows you to rent a scooter from their Chiang Mai office for 250b, pay an additional fee, and they will drive your bags up to Pai on the bus for you to pick up at their Pai office located on the main street.

They even throw in a free helmet. Winning!
All you have to worry about is keeping your eyes up and enjoying the ride.

Note: Make sure you pre-book as they are a very popular service with traveler’s. You may be lucky and receive an available bike for same-day service, but if you know your dates and have assembled your posse, book now!

Not Sure?

For those unsure or not a fan of scootering, you can book your transfers up to Pai and back with AYA, usually up to the day before, with times running throughout the day. Scooters available to rent for only 100b from AYA once you’re in Pai!

And with all things set in motion and Google Maps loaded, scooter gangs roll out.

On the Road:

Firstly, expect busy, multiple-lane highways.
Stick to the left.
My best piece of advice is to watch what the locals do.
Stay on the outside of the white lines and come to the front at traffic lights.

Then, after around 30 minutes, you start to see the green goodness. We stopped at a cute little cafe for a quick coffee and juice before venturing to our next stop, Mok Fa Waterfall (150b entry) (expect a steep climb uphill before a sharp descent down to the parking bay).

Then comes the fun bit…
Entering the lush scenery of dense forests and valleys. There are plenty of options to stop along the way for some delicious and local Pad Thai or visit the hot springs. The further along you go, you’ll come across jaw-dropping viewpoints with views across the insane valleys.

Before you know it, you’ll have arrived in charming little Pai, ready for your next adventure!

Hot Tips:

  • Avoid during rainy season and wet days

  • Drive on the left side of the road

  • Stop lots

  • Don’t be hungover

Riding through Highway 1095 on a scooter is a truly special experience and one not to be missed if you are comfortable and safe!
