Empowerment on International Women’s Day: Ending Sex Trafficking in Kolkata
Appreciating International Women’s Day with a whole new meaning this year 🥹🩵
@jules.eleven_ and I are in India learning about the crippling realities sex trafficking where women and girls - as young as 14 - are bought, sold, traded and stripped of the most basic human rights.
Kolkata is home to one of the largest red-light districts in Asia, with an estimated 10,000 sex workers, making it one of the biggest red-light areas in India.
Many victims come from rural villages or vulnerable communities, where traffickers promise jobs, education, or marriage but instead sell them into brothels. Others are kidnapped or even sold by their own families.
But amidst this darkness, there is hope…
Projects like @offspringproject are working to equip survivors and at-risk girls with skills, education, and a safe community, empowering them to rebuild their lives and create a future free from exploitation.
This International Women’s Day is a reminder that true empowerment comes from giving women the tools and opportunities to reclaim their independence and rewrite their stories.
We all have a role to play in the fight against human sex trafficking… every life is worth fighting for ✨
