5 Tips for Visiting the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

My First Solo Backpacking Adventure 2019 | Iceland | Age 18

1. Wear Warm Layers & Bring Extras

The last thing you wanna do is take all your clothes off in -20°.

So make sure you wear lots of layers and bring a change of clothes for afterwards (scarf and beanie)

2. Shower & Condition Your Hair First

It’s required to shower before entering. Lather your hair in conditioner (and leave it in) — the silica in the water can seriously dry it out or even cause a green tint and lingering smell.

3. Prepare for the Weirdest Sensation

The water is super warm, but the air isn’t — your body will love it, but your ears and nose might go numb. You’ll want to stay submerged up to your chin most of the time!

4. Book in Advance

Spots fill up fast, especially in winter.

Book your time slot online beforehand or I’d advise going with the tour company so you can meet people to hang out with, especially if you’re a solo traveller like me!

5. How Hot is the Blue Lagoon?

The water temperature is usually 37°C to 40°C (98°F to 104°F) — like a perfect, silky bath. The heat varies depending on where you stand, so move around to find your ideal spot.
